Getting Out of Hospital - Health Research Access Project

The QRNO Health Research Access Project commenced in 2007 recognising the need to provide reliable high speed networking access for university researchers, staff and students based at health precincts.  Stage 1 investigations found approximately 11 600 university staff and student placements within health precincts over the period 2007/8, developed models for the sharing of university infrastructure at health precincts and gained in-principle support from key health stakeholders for the sharing of LAN and WAN infrastructure and to establish a wireless solution at their sites.

Stage 2 (2009-2010) moved from investigation to implementation with major deliverables to be the deployment of eduroam at Queensland Health and Private Hospitals, underpinned by formalised agreements for sharing of network infrastructure, security guidelines and acceptable network architectures.  A major milestone was achieved with the successful deployment of eduroam at Mater Health Services South Brisbane Campus.  This work resulted in a re-evaluation of the AARNet technical and business model for eduroam leading to the creation of the ‘neutral site’ model allowing the deployment of eduroam to third party sites.

Queensland Health has provided significant support with the initiation of the University Access Services Project created to provide resources within Queensland Health to support the objectives of the Health Research Access Project.  To date, as a result of significant collaboration between the two projects; a Business Requirements Specification has been produced and accepted, an eduroam solution has been incorporated into the new Queensland Health wireless standard and an eduroam network design and architecture has been approved, built and undergone successful end-to-end (and security) testing.  Queensland Health’s financial commitment to date has totalled $2.3M.

The project moved to the final Stage 3 in 2011, continuing to support Queensland Health with the rollout of eduroam, promote learning and teaching access rights and investigate the viability of using a single PC with multiple virtual environments.

This presentation will provide an update of activities undertaken in the last 12 months and discuss how we seek to transition from the project to a service management model incorporating multiple organisations.
