Ian Atkinson

The Digital Regional Economy, the NBN and James Cook University

The NBN project promises the near ubiquitous access to broadband communications within Australia.  While the level of speed that the NBN will offer to consumers does not approach that provided to AARNet to its member institutions it is a quantum shift for domestic consumers – including university staff and students.

JCU is fortunate that its Townsville campus is adjacent to an NBN first and second release site.  Since the announcement of the trial sites JCU has been working with the NBN and other parties to explore the consequences of the NBN in Tropical Queensland and Australia.

This talk will discuss the anticipated benefits and risks associated with the NBN roll out and ways that Universities can assist in transitioning Australia into the Digital Economy.
