Cloud pretension - plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose
The cloud is changing everything. Apparently, it will improve all three aspects of security's "holy trinity" - availability, integrity and confidentiality - whilst simultaneously reducing cost and freeing up the IT department's time. (Deciding whether that freedom means a chance for IT staff to do more exciting things, or a chance for the financial planners to sack half the IT staff, is left as an exercise for the reader).
Ironically, the some of biggest adopters of cloud computing so far, and probably some of the biggest winners from its services, are the cybercrooks.
So is the cloud really something new and improved? Or is it more of the same old thing? Will it end up serving the cybercrooks better than it serves us? Or can we turn the cloud back against them?
Come to this talk for a duck's-eye view of these tricky questions.
