QUESTnet & AARNet Workshop

Internet Traffic Management and Accounting

QUESTnet, in partnership with AARNet, are hosting a workshop on Internet Traffic Management and Accounting.  It will be held in Brisbane at the Ship Inn, South Bank campus, Griffith University on 28–29 August 2012.

QUESTnet and AARNet have held previous workshops on this topic in early 2008 and in early 2011.  Both have been well attended (up to 26 different universities represented).  However, the AARNet charging model and traffic environment have altered significantly over this time; to a point where some universities are questioning their need to replace expensive cost accounting and quota management systems.

This workshop is targeting network and management staff from Australian universities who wish to increase their understanding of:

       The current AARNet charging model;

       AARNet future directions with charging and traffic policies;

       Present traffic management options being used by universities;

       What various universities are doing to manage their AARNet costs;

       The experiences (good and bad) of universities in managing their Internet costs with various tools and techniques

       What plans universities have to manage their Internet traffic & AARNet costs in the future.

The workshop will commence on Tuesday afternoon (28 Aug) with an AARNet briefing and case studies from a small number of universities.  This is to set the scene for the more general sharing of university experiences the following day.

On Wednesday, a representative from each university attending will present a brief update on their environment for managing and accounting for Internet traffic.  This day will specifically aim to engage attendees in active discussion of the material being presented.  It should not be viewed as daunting by those presenting, as it is intended to be a simple information sharing experience.  The intention is to make people aware of the community of practice that exists in relation to managing Internet traffic and costs

A dinner will be hosted on Tuesday evening to foster networking of attendees.  A draft program is overleaf.

To encourage attendance from a wide range of universities around Australia, there is no registration fee.

Conference Organisers will handle registrations for this event and can assist with arrangements for accommodation.  For more details contact:
