This workshop aims to assist universities with deploying Microsoft Windows 7 in their organisation. A certified Microsoft trainer will cover a range of topics relevant to such implementations on Day 1. Day 2 will be devoted to each university present outlining their plans and/or experiences to date; two case studies will be used to set the scene.
A dinner will be hosted on Thursday evening to foster networking of attendees.

Note:
All universities attending should be ready to have a representative outline their planning, progress and experiences with deployment of Windows 7 at their site(s). This need not be a lengthy presentation (typically 10 - 15 mins) but should cover the basics:
• No. of sites
• No. of PCs
• Current software environment
• Planned timing of deployment (or when started)
• Progress to date
• Tools used, or planned to be used, for migration
• Issues
• Any uncertainties you have

Microsoft Topics covered by Freddie Louwrens will include:
MAP & ACT
The MAP utility will help universities to determine which of their workstations are capable of running Windows 7.
I will cover what is required to run it and how to implement it within an organization.
ACT will help to determine which of the current applications and to a lesser extent websites will run successfully on Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8.
I will also discuss how to create patches that could fix some issues such as applications that requires administrative rights when running it or when ActiveX controls might be blocked on Windows 7 / IE 8
App-V & MED-V
Universities can utilise App-V for several reasons such as to allow several of the same applications (but different versions) to run on the same workstation or to assist universities to control which applications gets installed on a workstation.
I will discuss how to deploy app-v applications either using the App-V server or by means of SCCM 2007.
I will also discuss how to sequence an application and how to add add-ins and other middleware applications to the sequencing.
MED-V will help again where applications cannot run on Windows 7.
A virtual environment will thus be created on Windows 7 from where the applications can run in.
This will be seamless to the clients and they will not even be aware that the application is running in a virtual environment.
This can also be controlled from a central location which allow Admins to update the image with new apps/patches and then delta will be send down to the client workstations.
RemoteFX/VDI/RDS
RemoteFX enhances both RDS (Remote Desktop Services) and VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) as it allows for better graphics display.
In addition it also allows clients to utilise more graphic intense applications in a RDS environment or if VDI will be utilised in a VDI environment.
I will discuss what requirements are needed from both a hardware and software perspective.
I will also discuss some recommendations around RemoteFX.
There might be several requirements for VDI in some of the universities.
I will discuss the different types of VDI deployments (Personal Virtual Desktop vs. Pooled Virtual Desktops) that an organisation can implement within their environment.
I will also discuss requirements around implementing it and if RDS might not be a better option.
RDS aka Terminal Services can provide universities a good option to centralise specific applications and restrict which people can see and access which application.
I will discuss the different RDS roles (session broker, gateway etc.) and how they can benefit a university to give clients access from anywhere in the world.
MDT/SCCM & SCUP
There are several ways to deploy Windows 7 within an organization using either MDT, WDS or SCCM.
I will give a high level overview about each of these technologies and how to go about creating and deploying an image.
SCUP (System Center Updates Publisher) is an add-on to SCCM and cannot be utilized by itself.
With this product, Administrators will be able to either use or create their own catalogs where they can either update hardware (BIOS, drivers etc.) or software applications from different vendors.
I will cover what is required to configure it and deploy updates.
