University Engagement with Queensland Health

31 December 2011 saw the close of the Health Research Access Project (HRA). The project was initiated by the Queensland Regional Network Organisation (QRNO) in 2007 to seeking to improve network access for staff and students placed at hospital precincts for learning and teaching and research. Over the five years a number of significant milestones were accomplished, including:

  • Determining the no. of staff and student placements at health precincts in Qld with data made available via the HRA Web Application
  • In-principle agreements from Queensland Health for the sharing of network infrastructure, establish wireless access and and investigate multiple environments on a single PC.
  • eduroam wireless service deployed at Mater Health Services, South Brisbane using a new ‘Neutral Site’ model developed by the HRA in conjunction with AARNet
  • $2.3M committed by Queensland Health to initiate the University Access Services Project to support the goals of the HRAP to deploy eduroam at Queensland Health sites.
  • eduroam Proof-of-Concept released at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Skills Development Centre

Work continues with Queensland Health as eduroam is moved into production and support process and services levels are finalised. Other notable activities include inputs into design and network requirements for the Translational Research Institute, Gold Coast University Hospital and Queensland Children’s Hospital.
This presentation will focus on the engagement between the QRNO and Queensland Health as part of the HRA and current activities.
Questions which may or may not be answered include: How did we gain stakeholder support, who are they and what they did for us? What design and approval process did we have to work through and what issues arose? Who is liable for what? How did we make it work and who paid for what? Who fixes what if (when) it breaks? What is the service uptake? Just where is Muppet Labs? How many project managers does it take to release a wireless standard? How many serves of scrambled eggs were consumed? What other titles were proposed for this session?
