Global Real-Time Communications exchange and the AARNet Unified Communications eXchange

What is it all about and where are we up to?

The majority of Research and Education institutions have today deployed IP based Rich Media Communications, which may come in the form of, Telephony systems, traditional room based Video, Video Conferencing and/or high end TelePresence solutions. This is certainly the case within Australia, but is also the case in many other parts of the world and certainly within R&E. This talk is about detailing what AARNet is doing to facilitate cross-Institution Rich Media communications using disparate commercial and open source solutions.

AARNet is now in its third year of building and operating the AARNet Unified Communications eXchange. We will discuss what this service is and provide an update for this current operation.

AARNet is also providing leadership with the Global Real-Time Communications exchange, which is essentially an extension of AUCX on a global scale leveraging off the R&E centric ENUM infrastructure we call NRENum.net. We will highlight some of the key items of work undertaken, a list of which countries are involved and examples of specific Institutions.
