Research Storage at UNSW
A new long-term storage service is being provisioned at UNSW for research data. This service will be developed through 5 main streams of work to take place over the next few years.
- The long-term data store itself (1PB delivered and piloted in 2013 and extended in 2014-15.) Currently this is an on-premises store but we are looking at cloud options for the expansion;
- An interface which will provide access to the UNSW store and other available stores (including RDSI stores and "cloud" vendor stores - funded in 2013);
- An enhanced integration, reporting and metadata capability for the store (planned for 2014-15);
- An enterprise-supported Research equipment system (linking Research Devices to the store - planned for 2014-15); and
- Providing researchers with access to appropriate active file storage (planned for 2014-15).
We will provide an update on the progress of the Data store and Interface streams and lessons learnt from the pilot engagements including service functionality and performance. We will also comment on cloud storage considerations and how we are trying to align with the National Research Storage initiatives.
Luc Betbeder's Biography Luc Betbeder a long-time IT guy at UNSW and enjoys working to make UNSW a great place to carry out world-class teaching and research. Currently, he's trying to figure out the best way to store all those data their researchers generate. He first got online with BBS's in the late 80's and then jumped on the web with an Apple IIci in '93. Since then he spent a small fortune on mobile computing tech including the Apple Newton, Palm III, PocketPC's, Nokia 9000, Blackberries and iDevices. He started in admin at UNSW then moving to Public Health research and doing a bit of teaching. After his Masters he ended up working in IT. His current role is Director of Faculty IT services.
