Moving email to the cloud – a regional university experience
Australian Universities are increasingly considering (and deploying) cloud subscription services for applications and services. A highly commoditised service primed for moving to the cloud is email. In considering migrating email to the cloud, a number of business based and technical challenges exist. During 2012, Southern Cross University migrated its legacy email system to MS Office 365. This paper discusses the project responsible for email migration, and provides a valuable insight into the business drivers, project processes, technical aspects and business decisions and responses that ultimately drove the email shift to the cloud. The project was considered highly successful and valuable lessons have been learned that can be shared to facilitate other University or institution cloud take-up ventures.
