Managing Seamless Internet Access for Staff, Students and Related Entities

Adrian Dillon

The University of Tasmania relies heavily on the use of the Internet for research, e-learning, communication and collaboration. The University was monitoring parts of the Internet traffic using Proxy Servers and had some issues with provisioning users, tracking and classifying Internet usage (from non proxy aware internet applications) and finally seamlessly authenticating users onto the network.

In December 2008, the University appointed TSA Software Solutions to develop and deploy an “Internet Traffic Monitoring and Management Suite” following the release of tender UTAS0801. The key requirements from this tender were to be able to:

  • Track all Internet usage across all protocols
  • Classify Internet usage into AARNET provided classes
  • Seamlessly authenticate users on all devices
  • Provide secure session management to protect users
  • Flexible reporting for System Administrators, Managers and End Users
  • Provide a platform that supported billing for the voice network as well (Stage 2)
  • Provide a platform that could enforce flexible quotas and traffic management on the end user voice and data devices (Stage 3)

In this presentation, we will explain the solution in depth and how it has met the Universities requirements both today and into the future using technologies such as:

  • CAAB Enterprise from TSA Software Solutions
  • Service Control Engine from Cisco Systems
  • Active Directory by Microsoft
  • SQL 2005 Integration, Analysis and Reporting Services by Microsoft
  • Internet Information Services by Microsoft
  • Keystone powered by Oracle
