The Griffith migration from Novell to Active Directory and what wasn't in the manual.

Blake Carney

A discussion of the lessons learnt from a university-wide migration of staff and student desktop authentication, file and print services and desktop management based on eDir-ZEN (Novell) to AD2008-SCCM (Microsoft).

What were the challenges and solutions developed for:

  • integrating AD with the staff and student OSX and Linux environment?
  • simulating functions unique to NSS (Novell Storage System ) in NTFS?
  • provisioning the User groups required by AD to manage network resources?
  • phasing and coordinating desktop migrations with printer and storage migration, so as to not disrupt core university business?

Finally, what were the dividends for the clients, University and central computing services of this migration.
