OptIPortal Collaborations: Requirements and Progress Examples

Christoph Willing and Bernard Meade

The OptIPortal is a particular implementation of a clustered tiled display, a technique to harness the graphical output of multiple computers into a single display. SAGE (Scalable Adaptive Graphics Environment) provides a mechanism for suitably network connected remote sites to provide the content to drive such displays. For instance, the result of high performance computation at ANU could be rendered at University of Melbourne and displayed at University of Queensland. In fact the computation, rendering and display functions could be performed at remote sites anywhere in the world. Given the network-centric nature of the SAGE environment, the question arises whether it could form the basis of collaboration between remote OptIPortal sites. This presentation introduces the requirements for such collaboration and describes the results of efforts at QCIF/UQ, UMelbourne and AARNet to provide a framework for collaboration using the OptI Portal

Christoph Willing's Biography

Chris Willing built the first Access Grid node in Australia in 2001 at the University of Sydney Vislab and is now the Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation (QCIF) Access Grid Manager at the University of Queensland. QCIF/UQ currently hosts the Asia-Pacific Access Grid (APAG) venue services as well as providing the Access Grid software packages for various Linux distributions. In 2008 Chris built the second OptIPortal in Australia (after UMelbourne) and has since then been involved in applying collaboration techniques and applications to the OptIPortal.

Bernard Meade's Biography

Bernard Meade manages the Computer Visualization Facility as a part of Research Computing Services at the University of Melbourne. Shortly after the launch of OzIPortal in 2008, Australia's first OptIPortal, Research Computing Services took over operational management of the facility with Bernard as Technical Lead for the project. Since then, Bernard has set up a portable version of the OptIPortal and assisted in the development of collaborative applications it.
