Towards Technologically Healthy Children (K-12)

Collett Smart (BPsych, BEd, CCAA Clin, Assoc MAPS)

‘The average age of exposure to pornography is 11 years old, often unintentionally while doing homework.’ (Internet Filter Review and London School of Economics).

During the workshop we will look at the role technology plays in the lives of our children both positively and negatively. We will analyse the areas of risk in developing internet addictions, exposure to cyber bullying, mobile phone dangers and children at risk of ‘grooming’. We will learn about the neurological processes that occur during exposure to pornography and its effect on the developing brain. Finally we will look at ways to advise carers in assisting children to remain safe with technology. Practical steps will be discussed for assisting parents and teachers in how to help children with a possible internet addiction.
