Network Refresh with a Refreshed HP

David Edwards and Jason Rankin

University of Ballarat’s multiple campuses had a network infrastructure installed over a 5 year period resulting in various types of switches being installed over that time. Changing internal University processes delayed a network refresh such that there were now 8 year old (and failing) switches in a number of locations. In April 2009 a tender process was put in place to replace the network infrastructure at all campuses. We short listed from 12 respondents down to 4 and carried out a testing regime on the switches of those 4 to determine a best fit for UB.

After testing and coming to a final solution and recommendation that was adopted by the Steering Committee, it was announced that the winning tenderer “3Com- H3C” was to be purchased by “HP”. This presentation outlines the decisions made along the way… and why.

David Edwards' Biography

Manager ICT Networks & Infrastructure at University of Ballarat

From a microwave radio background to the first IT technician at the then Ballarat College of Advanced Education, David has evolved with the Institution as it has become the dual sector University of Ballarat, and the network has likewise evolved from the pre Ethernet serial based mini computer, through to the current 10Gb Ethernet LAN/WAN linking multiple campuses to several data centres catering to the ever increasing demands of the typical University.

Jason Rankin's Biography

Network Administrator at University of Ballarat

Took on the network administration at Ballarat in its days as a 155Mb ATM based LAN/WAN, and has been the one to “make it work” as the network evolved through 1Gb Ethernet “with VoIP” to its current 10Gb Ethernet “with the lot”.
