The Australian Access Federation (AAF) – One Year On

Heath Marks and Terry Smith

At the time of the QUESTNet2010 conference, the AAF will have turned one year old. The past year has seen a number of accomplishments including:

  • engagement with the Australian higher education and research communities to promote the benefits of joining the AAF;
  • introduction of the AAF Mini-grant Scheme to assist Service Providers with the deployment of their services to the Federation;
  • accelerated technical development and creation of an Australia-wide technical team;
  • investigating cross-federation arrangements to support international collaboration.

This presentation will include a brief overview of the first year of the AAF with a focus on some of the stories around the varied and noteworthy projects which were the subject of an AAF Mini-grant.

Heath Marks's Biography

Heath is the Australian Access Federation Project Manager and was appointed by CAUDIT in July 2009 to head a Project Team to support the AAF's initial operations, engage with the higher education and research sectors to specifically grow the Federation into the future and investigate opportunities for further development eg cross-federation opportunities. Heath has over 12 years experience in the delivery of Information Technology in the tertiary sector and was previously Project Manager for the collaborative Griffith-QUT Mobile Staff Productivity Project.

Terry Smith's Biography

Terry Smith - Terry is the Australian Access Federation Technical Program Manager and he and his team is responsible for migrating Australian institutions to the AAF Production environment, the latest version of Shibboleth and technical development and documentation. Prior to his AAF role, Terry worked in QUT's ITS department for 22 years and was instrumental in QUT’s embracement of SAML to deliver effective and efficient access to resources internal to the QUT with linkage to the broader Shibboleth Federation.
