IPv6 Deployment at Monash

John Mann

After a long gradual preparation phase, IPv6 is now being actively used at Monash.
About 5,000 Monash machines consume about 100 GB of external IPv6 traffic per day.
IPv6 has become a important service at Monash University.

This talk will describe Monash's IPv6 deployment history, uptake drivers, challenges, and
lessons learnt.

John Mann's Biography

Graduating from Monash University in 1980, John Mann spent 3 years in Canberra programming an OSI-model network for the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Since returning to Monash to work as a VMS system administrator, he has pioneered much of the networking at Monash, and has worked on re-creating, improving and expanding the Monash network every few years using each new wave of networking technology.

John was responsible for Monash's e-mail hub for 15 years, and is responsible for IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, routing and DNS.
He is currently involved hands-on with various higher-level network management, security, and e-Research projects.
