The challenges of providing an open, available and secure education network.
Kelvin Rundle
Education institutions are increasingly being faced with significant network service delivery challenges. Be it the increasing diversity of network traffic, 10 Gbps network speeds, cloud computing, a resistant to change user base, increased risk in being seen as the instigator of network attacks, and internal attacks/ network misuse impacting on service availability. All while having to operate with constrained resources in terms of both operational staff and lack of centralised funding pool to pay for network security upgrades. These roadblocks pose fundamental and conflicting challenges in providing an open, available and secure education network.
In this presentation you will learn through the use of Australian based case study examples, what are the challenges and opportunities for looking at refreshing the network security infrastructure for an education institution, what is the processes of defining the requirements for change, how to go about identifying potential solutions, an example solution and lessons learnt. By the conclusion of this presentation you will have a fundamental understanding of a potential solution for providing an open, available and secure education network while working within the constraints of the most common operational environments.
