Delivering Secure University Infrastructure: Checkpoint R70 firewall implementation at the University of Southern Queensland

Luke Drury replaced by Scott Sorley

In 2009 the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) created a new data centre and was faced with redesigning the network to incorporate this data centre. The redesign also needed to represent various areas of the network in a different manner to provide the most robust and secure solution possible in reflecting the tiered deployment of the server infrastructure.

The University chose a Checkpoint R65 firewall solution, based on evaluation as well as discussion with other organisations who were already using the solution. USQ faced several constraints in this implementation including budgetary, the flexibility required for future proofing, and USQ’s physical location as a regional university. However, implementation was successful and was followed by an upgrade to the latest version R70, in September 2009, along with further utilisation and deployment of the solution to the other university campuses.

This presentation will give an overview of the university’s environment prior to implementation, the requirements to firewall the new data centre and the reasons behind choosing Checkpoint as a solution. The process of how the solution was implemented, along with the issues that arose throughout the implementation phase will then be discussed. The upgrade to version R70 will be examined as well as how the university has since extended the deployment of the solution to include another campus of the university. Finally, the presentation will look at the advantages and benefits that the university has encountered in choosing this particular solution.
