A Year of Green IT at QUT
With increasing pressure on organisations to become more sustainable, management is turning to ICT for solutions and Green IT Programs are becoming more common place. This presentation reflects on a year of the Green IT Program at the Queensland University of Technology from the perspective of the Program Manager.
The speaker will explore the various facets of the Program from how it fits within the organisation’s overarching commitment to sustainability, to the granular metrics and KPIs that track progress towards ambitious energy, materials, efficiency and CO2 targets. The speaker will discuss the relationship between ICT and Facilities Management and explore the various challenges that arose from this alliance in relation to values, culture, process, politics and project management. The speaker will go on to discuss QUT’s ICT energy consumption baseline followed by the diverse range of initiatives which are aiming to reduce both this and the overall carbon footprint of QUT’s ICT operations. In conclusion, the speaker will discuss the future direction of the Program and the shift in focus from ICT infrastructure to community.
![]() | Michael Flynn's Biography Michael Flynn is currently the Program Manager for the Green IT Program at the Queensland University of Technology. This role spans IT, Facilities Management and Marketing with the objective of progressing a portfolio of Green IT initiatives which will achieve measured reductions in QUT's energy consumption and carbon footprint. Michael has been with the Program since it began in May 2009. Michael has worked for QUT for the past 6 years in various technical and project roles throughout QUT’s Divisions. Previous roles include Student Helpdesk Coordinator, Technical Support Officer and in 2008-2009, Senior Project Officer on the QUT/Griffith University Mobile Staff Productivity Project which delivered various research outcomes and mobile technology packages to the sector. Michael holds a Bachelor of Information Technology from QUT. |
