Where, Why?

Peter Hicks

The role of computing in organisations has changed significantly over the past 30 years. In 2010, as the network makes contact, we are taking a giant leap that will redefine our roles as ICT professionals. We all come to work because we love what we do. Most of the time we focus on keeping the systems running and planning the next technological implementation. Our organisations invite us back each day because we make a valuable contribution to their operations. Yet, each of us can and must contribute more if our organisations are to thrive.

This presentation connects many of the conference themes to the changing role of ICT service organisations and professionals with a specific focus on the network as a critical factor. It considers the future for university-based ICT service organisations in the context of technology-enabled changes in business and the ICT industry over the past three decades. The implications of significant changes in service delivery models and client expectations are profound and will alter our collective self-perception.
