AARNet/Monash experience in Cisco IME trial
Royce Gonsalves and Leon Li

In today’s Unified Communication world, simple Voice only calls cannot meet the requirements of business users. Video-enabled phone calls capable of transmitting video, rich caller ID, wideband audio etc between organizations, similar to communication within their own organization are features that are highly desirable. Cisco Intercompany Media Engine (IME) fulfils this goal.
It provides a technique for establishing direct IP connectivity between enterprises, so that all the rich multi-media information can be delivered across business’ intranet borders securely. Cisco conducted an Early Field Trial of IME in partnership with AARNet, Monash, CSIRO, and Swinburne University in the first quarter of 2010. With the IME server hosted in AARNet, the partner organisations could test the features and functionality of VoIP and video-enabled calls traversing network boundaries using existing telephone numbers. This presentation includes the concepts and requirements of IME, how it works, our experience and problems during the trial, the trial results and its cons and pros.
